A self-described failed filmmaker falls obsessively in love with her theorist-husband's colleague: a manifesto for a new kind of feminism and the power of first-person narration. Her long essay on the work of photographer Reynaldo Rivera is forthcoming in a book on the artist’s work from Semiotext(e) in Spring 2020. The novel begins with “Chris Kraus” falling suddenly and electrically in love with “Dick [Hebdige],” an English cultural critic and friend of her husband “Sylvère Lotringer.” Like Kraus and Lotringer, “Chris” and “Sylvère” met on the New York art scene of the 1980s, where he was an established figure and she an aspiring director. When Chris Kraus, an unsuccessful artist pushing 40, spends an evening with a rogue academic named Dick, she falls madly and inexplicably in love, enlisting her husband in her haunted pursuit. Dick proposes a kind of game between them, but when he fails to answer their letters Chris continues alone, transforming an adolescent infatuation into a new form of philosophy. The interest in reportage led me to read ing some of the early English histories of the high Middle Ages, which were mostly called chronicles. They're both subjective and factual; I'm fascinated by that. In I Love Dick, published in 1997, Chris Kraus, author of Aliens & Anorexia, Torpor, and Video Green, boldly tore away the veil that separates fiction from reality and privacy from self-expression. Her long essay on the work of photographer Reynaldo Rivera is forthcoming in a book on the artist’s work from Semiotext(e) in Spring 2020. Chris Kraus (b. 1955) is a Los Angeles–based writer, art critic, and editor whose novels include I Love Dick (1997), Torpor (2006), and Summer of Hate (2012).Her writing navigates and mediates seamlessly between autobiography, fiction, philosophy, and art criticism. I know there was a time before I read Chris Kraus’s I Love Dick (in fact, that time was only five years ago), but it’s hard to imagine; some works of art do this to you. They tear down so many assumptions about what the form can handle (in this case, what the form of the novel can handle) that there is no way to re-create your mind before your encounter with them. Chris Kraus has a mind-bending talent for theorizing and performing femininity in the same monologue.
